Several bills have gone before Illinois state lawmakers that could have profound effects on Peoria home owners and Peoria home buyers.

As your Peoria real estate experts, our job is not only to remain up-to-date on Peoria real estate news, but also on Illinois legislation that affects you.

Living in Peoria, Illinois

Here’s a look at some of the legislation that recently passed in the Illinois Senate:

Illinois Property Tax Legislation: The senate passed legislation that gives taxpayers up to 20 years to petition for refunds for inaccurate property assessments. Right now, Illinois property owners only have five years.

The senate also approved legislation that allows a taxpayer to work with review boards in order to settle on a property tax appeal.  This is allowed even after the petition has been filed by the Property Tax Appeal Board, giving home owners a better chance of getting a favorable outcome to their appeal.

State Redistricting: The Illinois state government is currently discussing whether to redraw district lines.  This is incredibly important to Peoria home owners because it affects who your representative is, how much money your district receives and more. Additional hearings are expected to be scheduled given the weight that a redistricting decision would carry.

Interested in learning more? The House and Senate Republican Caucuses said that they will give the public access to the district map drawing room in the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago.  Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until noon.  You can also make an appointment by calling 312-814-2053.

Merging the Treasurer and Comptroller Offices: The Illinois Senate also approved legislation that would merge the Illinois office of the Treasurer with the Comptroller.  The constitutional amendment, known as SJRCA 13, would save the state between $10 and $12 million, according to some estimates.

If it’s passed in the state House of Representatives, Illinois voters will have a chance to vote on the issue on the November ballot.

Unemployment Benefits: The Governor approved extending unemployment benefits for tens of thousands of Illinois residents. The legislation will also allow for Illinois to continue receiving extended benefit assistance from the federal government.

The move couldn’t have come at a better time.  More than 40,000 people would have lost benefits by mid-May had the measure not been passed.

These new pieces of legislation still need to be passed in the Illinois House of Representatives.  If and when that happens, you can bet I’ll have your most up-to-date information right here on my Peoria community blog!
