It’s an exciting time here in Peoria, Illinois.  That’s because we just held our 2011 Peoria City Council election on April 5.

Based on the election results of that night, our new and returning council members are:

  • Chuck Weaver
  • Ryan Spain, councilman since 2007
  • Gary Sandberg, councilman since 1989
  • W. Eric Turner, a councilman since 1995
  • Beth Akeson

Although national and state government decisions tend to get more coverage in the media, the truth is that the city council will have the biggest effect on your day-to-day living.  That’s why we here at The Knell Group work hard to keep you updated on what issues city council is discussing that might affect you.

Relocating to Peoria, Illinois

Because local government plays such an important role in the daily lives of Peoria home owners, I want to tell you a little bit about each one of the local politicians representing you.

Chuck Weaver is a  newly elected official who received an endorsement from The Business PAC of Central Illinois, which represents about 387 businesses in the area. He is a commercial real estate investor who doesn’t believe in using subsidies to encourage development.

Ryan Spain, a councilman since 2007, also received an endorsement from The Business PAC of Central Illinois. He doesn’t believe there should be any more property tax increases for the time being.  He’s placed priority on business retention in Peoria.

Gary Sandberg, councilman since 1989, received an endorsement from Local 50, which is a union. He places priority on police, fire and public works.  He regularly has not supported economic subsidies for new developments in the city

W. Eric Turner, a councilman since 1995, also received an endorsement from The Business PAC of Central Illinois.  His main priority is public safety.  He’s also recently pushed for better code enforcement in the city.  Just like Spain, he wants to hold off on any property tax increases.

Beth Akeson has placed priority on addressing land use issues throughout the city. She’s also a proponent of sharing resources with neighboring governmental entities.
